[Over 80% of ships reroute to Oman’s channel, Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz is weakening]
BlockBeats News, August 19: Shipping data indicates that the actual transit pattern of the Strait of Hormuz is undergoing changes. According to Kpler data, over the past two weeks, more than 80% of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz have opted for the Oman-side channel. This route is authorized by the United Nations but was previously opposed by Iran. Analysts believe that while both the U.S. and Iran claim control over the Strait of Hormuz, neither side has fully dominated this critical global energy corridor.
Kpler’s Head of Crude Oil Analysis, Homayoun Falakshahi, stated that it is becoming increasingly evident that Iran has at least partially lost control over the strait. A month ago, Kpler detected almost no ships using the Oman route, but now the proportion has risen to over 80%. Meanwhile, the number of ships choosing Iran’s preferred route has significantly decreased, impacting Iran’s ability to collect transit fees through the strait. The U.S. continues to monitor shipping security through its naval deployments.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright noted that the current oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz and rerouted channels is approximately 15 million barrels per day, close to the pre-conflict level of around 20 million barrels per day. However, Iran still retains a certain level of deterrence capability. Analysts pointed out that if Iran’s goal was to fully control the strait, it has never truly achieved this; however, creating risks and influencing shipping through military actions remains a key strategic tool.
Currently, Iran and Oman are discussing the restoration of free navigation arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar has stated that if a relevant agreement is reached, it could create conditions for bringing the U.S. and Iran back to the negotiating table. However, former President Trump recently stated that the U.S. and Iran are not engaged in any negotiations or dialogue at this time. [Original Link]
