[Unstoppable Abandons Current ICANN Domain Application Round, Refunds Web3 Domain Customers]
According to The Defiant, Unstoppable Domains founder Matthew Gould announced that the company did not submit an application for Web3 top-level domains in ICANN's 2026 domain application round. The company is refunding customers who purchased related domains, effectively ending its commitment since 2019 to enable domains like .crypto and .wallet to resolve in standard browsers. Previously, the company had stated plans to apply for extensions such as .ZIL, .Crypto, .Wallet, .NFT, .Bitcoin, and .DAO. Gould explained that the compliance, application, and bidding costs associated with advancing Web3 domains through ICANN far exceeded the anticipated revenue, making refunds a more reasonable decision than continuing the process.
