On August 24, 2026, the U.S. Treasury Department's OFAC, under Executive Order 13902, issued its first-ever industry designation covering digital assets, authorizing sanctions against foreign individuals operating in or providing services to Iran's digital asset sector. The operation is code-named 'Economic Expulsion Action.'
Nearly 60 entities were added to the sanctions list at the same time, including UAE broker Ivan Obukhov, who was accused of facilitating over $100 million in cryptocurrency payments for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. A total of five industry designations were issued, covering not only digital assets but also technology, gold, aviation, and shipping.
