[Anthropic Hires Google Custom Chip Project Founder to Prepare for In-House Semiconductor Development] Reported by Jinse Finance, on August 22, Anthropic has hired Amir Salek, the founder of Google's custom chip project, to prepare this AI lab for entering the in-house semiconductor field. Anthropic stated on Friday that Salek will join Anthropic's compute team and report to James Bradbury. Salek previously oversaw Google's Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) business until 2022 and contributed to the launch of the first seven generations of TPU chips. Currently, Anthropic procures chips from multiple suppliers, including Nvidia, Google, and Amazon, but has recently expressed intentions to establish its own chip business. The San Francisco-based company has started recruiting for related projects and has posted job openings. Like other AI giants, Anthropic is accelerating efforts to secure sufficient data center infrastructure to support its development goals. Developing in-house chips is expected to help the company address supply shortages while customizing chip designs to meet its specific needs. Competitor OpenAI is taking similar steps. The ChatGPT developer has announced the co-development of Jalapeno chips with Broadcom and plans to begin using them later this year.
