This is one of the earliest publicly traceable actions in Bitcoin's history, even earlier than the release of the white paper (October 31, 2008) and the mining of the Genesis Block (January 3, 2009). If the Genesis Block marks Bitcoin's birth, then registering the bitcoin domain was the preparation phase.
