[SK Hynix ADR Trades at a 10% Premium, South Korean Retail Investors Poured $4.5 Billion into U.S. Stocks in July]
BlockBeats News, August 18: South Korean retail investors are shifting funds from the domestic stock market to the U.S. market. According to data from the Korea Securities Depository, South Korean investors made net purchases of approximately $4.5 billion in U.S. stocks in July, with around $840 million flowing into SK Hynix's U.S.-listed ADR, making it one of the most purchased U.S. securities by South Korean investors.
Notably, South Korean investors could have directly purchased SK Hynix shares in the domestic market but chose to buy its U.S. ADR instead, leading to a significant price discrepancy between the two markets. Currently, SK Hynix ADRs trade at about a 10% premium compared to its domestic shares, and the U.S.-listed stock exhibits higher volatility. Owen Lamont, Senior Vice President at Acadian Asset Management, believes this rare price difference may be a sign of excessive market speculation or even "symptoms of a bubble."
The shift of South Korean retail investors to U.S. stocks has not reduced their risk appetite, as AI, semiconductors, and highly leveraged products remain their core bets. Among the top 10 U.S. stocks most purchased by South Korean investors in July, four were leveraged products, with the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares ETF (SOXL) being the most popular.
Meanwhile, the margin balance in the South Korean stock market has dropped from approximately 37 trillion won at the end of June to about 27 trillion won in early August. Analysts point out that South Korean retail investors may simply be transferring their high-risk AI trades from the domestic market to the U.S. market rather than truly exiting risk assets.
Industry experts believe that while the scale of South Korean funds is insufficient to influence the overall trend of the U.S. stock market, their concentrated trading could further amplify price volatility in high-risk assets that are heavily favored by retail investors, such as AI chips, quantum computing, and leveraged ETFs.
