18 years ago, Musk had already written the blueprint for SpaceX’s next 20 years In 2008, SpaceX didn’t have the aura it does today. The Falcon 1 had just gone through multiple failures, and almost no one believed in private rocket companies. Yet, standing in a Hollywood living room, Musk had already laid bare the biggest contradiction in the aerospace industry: Rockets are too expensive, not because they can’t be built, but because they can only be used once. He said: If cars could only be driven once, how many people would still buy them? This is the core logic behind the founding of SpaceX. For decades, cars, airplanes, and ships have been improving their reusability, but rockets have remained stuck in the era of disposable products. Every launch requires manufacturing a massive amount of hardware from scratch, so naturally, costs can’t come down. Musk’s goal at the time was crystal clear: first, use the Falcon series to prove that private companies can reach orbit; then, recover the first stage of the rocket; and ultimately, achieve full reusability of the entire launch system. Because only by doing this can space exploration transition from being a one-off government project to becoming a commercial infrastructure, much like air transportation. He also explained why reaching orbit is so difficult. Getting to space isn’t the hardest part—you can reach the edge of space at about Mach 3. But to enter orbit, you need to hit about Mach 25, because it’s not just about flying upward; it’s about moving at high speed around the Earth. The ultimate challenge in rocket design: for traditional orbital rockets, the payload that actually makes it to orbit is only a few percent of the rocket’s total launch weight. Add just a little extra weight, and the entire mission could fail. That’s why reusable rockets are far more challenging to build than disposable ones. Looking back 18 years later, SpaceX’s path has almost perfectly followed the plan laid out back then. The Falcon 9 has become one of the most frequently reused orbital rockets in the world. Its first stage is recovered and reused repeatedly, redefining the cost of commercial launches. Next up, Starship is taking on an even bigger goal: making the entire system fully reusable and sending humans to the Moon and Mars. What’s even more fascinating is that Musk in 2008 had already figured out the business logic and ultimate goal: Lower the cost of reaching space → Build space transportation capabilities → Make life a multi-planetary species. Many companies define their vision after they succeed. SpaceX, on the other hand, had already written its 20-year roadmap during its most precarious moments.
