Can Crude Oil Maintain 2026 Gains vs. Gold in 2H? Gold faces headwinds in 2H from the highest US Treasury 30-year yields in about two decades, partly due to crude oil's bounce in 1H. Bounce is emphasized, as WTI crude's 1Q high near $120 a barrel was below 2022's peak of $130, and at $82 on Aug. 14, WTI is unchanged from 2007. Juxtaposed is gold's 1Q record near $5,600 an ounce. Crude has been in a lower highs and lows pattern since 2008's peak near $147, while gold is in a bull market but may have set an enduring high. What to expect into year-end? Crude's greater volatility and enduring underperformance vs. gold could prevail. President Donald Trump's desire for lower energy prices and inflation by the midterms may be a top factor for the roughly 53 barrels of crude per ounce of gold to keep rising. Our graphic highlights elevated bonds yields as a top reversion candidate.
