Physical media for movies and video games peaked between 2005 and 2008 before entering a long-term decline. Movie disc sales reached roughly $16 billion in 2005, while physical game sales peaked at $11.6 billion in 2008, with broadband, streaming, and digital distribution accelerating the shift away from physical copies.
Physical media once defined how people experienced movies, music, and video games. VHS and cassette tapes gave way to CDs and DVDs, while games moved from cartridges to discs. By the 2000s, browsing shelves at video stores and building personal collections were everyday parts of entertainment culture.
That began changing as broadband improved and digital distribution took over. Netflix, iTunes, Steam, and console marketplaces made entertainment instantly accessible, shifting culture from owning physical copies to accessing digital libraries. Movies and games stopped being things you could hold, display, lend, or resell and increasingly became services tied to accounts and online platforms.(Historic Vids)
