Could the US launch a ground offensive against Venezuela? A couple of days ago, Trump posted that Venezuelan airspace is now considered closed and then threatened a ground invasion. Personally, I think the likelihood of a large-scale ground offensive is pretty low. 1) Right now, the US military has gathered around 15,000 troops in the Caribbean region, but this force is hardly enough to launch a large-scale ground invasion against a country with an area of nearly 1 million square kilometers, 70% of which is tropical rainforest. 2) Plus, this time the US military is acting alone—no NATO allies are sending troops, and the UK has even suspended intelligence sharing with the US. From what I recall, every large-scale US military operation since WWII has involved a coalition of allies. 3) Trump knows very well that reorganizing the US's backyard is important, but avoiding getting the US stuck in another military quagmire is even more critical. Right now, the focus is still on domestic affairs and the economy, especially fixing the budget. The most likely action: airstrikes + a single special forces ground raid to complete the mission, then a quick withdrawal followed by declaring victory ✌️. Trump is still applying pressure and trying to intimidate Maduro into stepping down voluntarily, but that seems pretty unlikely too.
