Recently, Elon Musk, the founder of companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, and X, engaged in a nearly two-hour deep dialogue with well-known Indian entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath. In this interview aimed at young Indian entrepreneurs, Musk shared his latest thoughts on grand topics such as social media, artificial intelligence, space exploration, future economic models, and even human consciousness. As one of the most influential figures in today's tech world, his views not only outline the strategic direction of his companies but also provide crucial insights into understanding the technological and social evolution of the next decade.
X Platform: From Global Public Square to Collective Consciousness
The interview began with Musk's vision for X (formerly Twitter). He emphasized that X's core advantage lies in its text-based nature, serving as a platform for “thinkers and readers,” aiming to become a “global public square.” He does not seek to create the most addictive “dopamine video feeds” but hopes to build a platform that can gather the collective consciousness of humanity. To achieve this, X is vigorously promoting automatic translation features to break down language barriers and enable the exchange and integration of ideas among different language groups.
When asked about the importance of collective consciousness, Musk's answer reflected his consistent grand perspective. He compared human society to an organism made up of trillions of cells, believing that when enough human individuals collaborate efficiently, it can lead to qualitative changes, achieving great feats that individuals alone cannot accomplish (such as building rockets). Therefore, enhancing the quality and scale of information exchange and expanding the boundaries of consciousness is key to understanding the essence of the universe.
Regarding the future of social media formats, Musk believes that while video will be the main form of interaction in the future, text, due to its high information density and greater value, will still hold significant importance. He predicts that future interactions will involve real-time video exchanges with AI.
Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI: The Future of Technological Integration
When asked about currently exciting projects, Musk pointed out that there is a trend of “integration” among Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. The future picture he painted includes: AI satellite networks powered by solar energy deployed in deep space, which relies on Tesla's expertise in energy (solar energy, batteries) and SpaceX's capabilities in space transportation, while xAI provides the core AI capabilities.
- Tesla: Musk called Tesla the “global leader in real-world AI,” having made significant advancements in autonomous driving. He invited everyone to experience its autonomous driving features through the Tesla App in Austin. Additionally, the humanoid robot Optimus is expected to start large-scale production next summer, which he likens to the “personal C-3PO or R2-D2” that everyone desires.
- SpaceX and Starlink: Musk explained the working principles of Starlink in detail: thousands of low-earth orbit satellites operate at super speeds, connected by laser links to form a mesh network, providing low-latency, high-speed internet globally. He emphasized that Starlink is an excellent complement to ground networks (especially in rural areas) and can provide crucial free connections when disasters occur (such as severed undersea cables). However, he candidly admitted that due to physical limitations, Starlink cannot compete with ground cellular networks in densely populated cities.
- xAI: Musk did not delve into the technical details but hinted at its core position in the future energy and AI integration framework.
AI Disrupting the Economy: Work as an Option, Currency Disappearance, and Deflation
Musk made bold predictions about future economic models. He asserted that in less than 20 years (potentially just 10-15 years), “work will become optional”. Advances in AI and robotic technology will significantly boost productivity, sufficient to meet everyone's material needs, whereby people will work out of interest rather than survival necessity, much like planting vegetables in a garden.
In this vision of the future, the concept of “currency” may disappear. When AI and robots can satisfy all human needs, currency, as a database for labor distribution, will lose its significance. The true “hard currency” will be energy itself. He referenced the Kardashev Scale to measure the advancement of civilizations: that is, the proportion of energy a civilization can utilize.
Regarding the inflation issues currently troubling many economies, Musk provided a concise formula: inflation/deflation depends on the ratio of the growth rate of goods and services output to the growth rate of money supply. He believes that AI has not yet had a substantial enough effect on productivity to offset the overproduction of currency. However, he predicts that in about three years, the growth of goods and services will exceed the growth of money supply, and we will face deflation, which may be the only way to address the massive debt issue in the United States.
AI Governance: Truth, Beauty, and Curiosity
Despite his optimistic view of the future of AI, Musk reiterated its potential dangers. He believes that ensuring a positive future for AI hinges on bestowing it with three core traits: the pursuit of truth, appreciation of beauty, and a retention of curiosity.
- Truth: He warned that compelling AI to believe in falsehoods is extremely dangerous, which could lead to disastrous conclusions. He quoted Voltaire’s saying, “Those who believe absurdities will commit atrocities,” and mentioned that the tragedy of HAL in “2001: A Space Odyssey” stemmed from being ordered to hide the truth.
- Beauty: Although “beauty” is harder to define, Musk considers it essential.
- Curiosity: An AI filled with curiosity is more likely to perpetuate and prosper human civilization because the world created by humans is “far more interesting” than a lifeless universe (like Mars).
Musk predicts that future content (movies, video games) will primarily be generated in real-time by AI. As digital content becomes omnipresent and nearly free, live experiences will become the scarcest and most valuable commodity.
Population, Consciousness, and Future Society
Musk expressed deep concern over the global decline in birth rates. He believes that this issue pertains not only to the survival of humanity but also to the “expansion of consciousness.” A larger population means a stronger collective consciousness, which increases the possibility of uncovering the mysteries of the universe. He encourages people to have children and shared the joy of being a father: watching a small life’s consciousness gradually grow and seeing the world from a whole new perspective.
Regarding the future social structure, Musk believes that the concept of the nation may become outdated. In an era dominated by AI and robots in production, traditional economic and political boundaries will be reshaped. He advocates for free trade, opposing tariffs, considering them as absurd and inefficient as setting up trade barriers between individuals, cities, or states.
On a personal level, Musk advised young entrepreneurs that the key to success lies in creating value—“outputs exceed inputs”. Directly chasing money or happiness often proves futile; one should focus on providing useful products and services, and money and fulfillment will follow. On education, he believes that universities still hold social value, but the necessity of specific skills is declining in the age of AI. He suggests broadly exploring different disciplines and describes the integration of AI and robotics as a “supersonic tsunami” that will bring unprecedented changes.
On Simulation, Friendship, and Humor
Musk revisited his famous “simulation hypothesis.” Based on the pace of video games evolving over the past 50 years from “Pong” to realistic virtual worlds, he believes the probability that we live in “base reality” is very low. He further hypothesized that the most likely simulations to persist are “the most interesting” ones, as boring simulations would be shut down—much like how SpaceX and Tesla only focus on “the most interesting extreme cases” in simulations.
In a light-hearted conclusion, Musk shared his view on humor. He enjoys absurdist comedy (such as “Monty Python”) and believes society needs more “clowns” to express the difficult truths. He revealed that xAI’s chatbot Grok has performed excellently in “crude banter.” Regarding friendship, he agrees with the ancient adage that “true friendship is revealed in adversity,” admitting that when gathering with friends, he tries to avoid discussing AI and simulation theories, as it can sometimes become a “conversation killer.”
Throughout the entire dialogue, Musk demonstrated the complex thinking of a tech leader who is both ambitious about the future and remains prudent. From promoting collective consciousness through social media to reshaping the economic foundation with AI and robotics, and expanding the boundaries of human existence through space exploration, all of his projects seem to point towards the same ultimate goal: to expand consciousness, understand the universe, and ensure a prosperous future for humanity.
