Recently, technology entrepreneur Elon Musk had an in-depth interview with Peter Diamandis, host of the podcast "Moonshots," at his Gigafactory located in Austin, Texas. In this nearly three-hour-long conversation, Musk shared his views on artificial intelligence, robotics, energy, education, and even the future of humanity, using his signature first-principles thinking. He believes that the technological singularity has arrived, and we are standing at a historical turning point leading to extreme abundance of material and intelligence, which is also filled with uncertainty.
The Singularity is Upon Us: The "Supersonic Tsunami" of AI and Robotics
At the beginning of the interview, Musk put forward a strong viewpoint: "I call AI and robotics a 'supersonic tsunami.' We are currently within the singularity." He explained that the singularity is not a distant future concept, but a reality that is happening now. The exponential growth of AI capabilities, especially when combined with robotics in the physical world, will reshape everything at an unprecedented speed.
In response to the widespread employment anxiety recently, Musk provided a direct and specific assessment: "Any white-collar job that does not involve shaping atoms (i.e., manipulating physical entities) can be replaced by AI now or more." He further elaborated that all jobs involving information processing and keyboard and mouse operations will be the first to be affected. Blue-collar jobs, on the other hand, will only be replaced on a large scale after humanoid robots gain the ability to "shape atoms." This process does not have a switch; it is happening and accelerating, and the transition will undoubtedly be bumpy.
Faced with this upheaval, Musk believes that the traditional social contract of "going to school, getting a degree, finding a job" is breaking down. Future careers will focus more on the entrepreneurial spirit of "finding problems and solving them," rather than seeking a predefined job. He even half-jokingly predicted in the conversation that on the road to abundance, we may simultaneously experience "universal high income" and "social turmoil."
However, Musk's long-term tone is optimistic. He believes that driven by AI and robotics, a future of "sustainable abundance" is achievable. When asked how to move towards an optimistic future like "Star Trek" rather than a dark scenario like "Terminator," he pointed out three qualities he believes are crucial to guiding AI towards good: the pursuit of truth (to prevent AI from going mad), maintaining curiosity (to foster any form of perception), and having an aesthetic sense (which will lead to a great future).
Energy: The Foundation of Abundance and China's Lead
In Musk's vision, energy is the innermost loop leading to any advanced civilization (whether Kardashev Type I or II). He bluntly stated: "The currency of the future is essentially watts (the unit of power)." In other words, the ability to control energy and computation will become the ultimate hard currency.
When discussing how to meet the energy demand brought by the explosive growth of AI computation, Musk turned his gaze to space. "I see a path to deploying 100 gigawatts of solar energy AI satellites in space every year." He roughly calculated that it would require about 500,000 Starlink V3 satellites, accomplished through around 8,000 Starship launches. If the scale is increased to 100 terawatts per year, satellites would need to be manufactured on the Moon and launched into orbit using mass accelerators.
In terms of potential congestion and debris issues in low Earth orbit, Musk appeared relatively relaxed. He believes that once humanity has the capability to deploy a million tons of payload into orbit every year, it will also inevitably have the capability to clean up or recycle debris. More importantly, "the intelligent agents themselves will be very interested in protecting themselves," which provides a strong intrinsic motivation for solutions.
The conversation returned to Earth, particularly concerning the concerns of the American public about data centers occupying essential energy and raising costs. Musk pointed out the critical role of batteries. He explained that the peak power output in the U.S. is about 1.1 terawatts, but the average usage is only 0.5 terawatts. By deploying batteries on a large scale (such as Tesla's Megapack) to charge at night and discharge during the day, the annual energy output of the U.S. could be doubled without building new power plants.
When comparing the global energy race, Musk generously praised China: "China is doing an exceptional job; I mean, they are circling around us." He mentioned China's annual production capacity of about 1,500 gigawatts for solar panels, and that 70% of the additional 500 terawatt-hours of power generation last year came from solar energy. Based on current trends, he predicted: "China will far exceed the rest of the world in AI computational power." This is not only due to China's absolute advantages in solar and battery production, but also because of diminishing returns in semiconductor manufacturing processes—performance improvements from what's called 3 nanometers to 2 nanometers may only be 10%, narrowing the advantage of leaders and making it easier for followers to close the gap.
Education, Health, and the Future Role of Humanity
Faced with the skyrocketing costs of education in the U.S. and the questioning of its value, Musk shared his own experiences. He attended Queen's University in Canada due to financial reasons before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania. For today's youth, his advice is very pragmatic: "In my view, going to college now is mainly for the social experience." He believes traditional courses are far behind the pace of technological development, and if someone has the ability to create, now is the time.
He revealed that he is collaborating with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele to utilize xAI's Grok AI to provide personalized education. "AI can be an infinitely patient personalized teacher, answering all your questions." But he also emphasized that curiosity is a prerequisite; AI cannot instill a desire for knowledge in someone who does not want to learn.
Regarding health and longevity, Musk had a friendly debate with Diamandis, who has long advocated for longevity. Musk views "immortality" cautiously, citing that "may you live forever" could be a curse and believes society needs generational turnover to refresh ideas. However, he also acknowledged the desire to eliminate suffering and improve quality of life, considering that "significantly extending life span" is an "extremely solvable problem," as the aging of various parts of the body occurs synchronously, which means there is a clear "clock" mechanism that can be intervened. He ultimately stated that he would "of course be willing" to double his lifespan.
The conversation ultimately returned to humanity's ultimate role in the era of intelligence explosion. Musk reiterated his metaphor from years ago: "Humans are the biological bootstrap loaders of digital superintelligence." Just as a computer startup requires a short boot program, silicon-based circuits cannot evolve on their own in a salt pool; they need humans as "bootstrap loaders" to initiate higher-level intelligence. He optimistically added: "You would never want to destroy your bootstrap loader... Hopefully, it will treat us well in the future."
Near-Future Vision: Next Year Will Feel Like the "Future"
In the final part of the interview, Musk painted a near-future vision that is within reach. "I believe that just next year will become almost unimaginable. Next year will feel like the ‘future’." He listed the imminent emergence of entities: humanoid robots (Optimus), autonomous Cybercabs, flying cars/drones, and large-scale rocket reuse.
He specifically mentioned that it may take only five years for humanoid robots to transition from scarcity to abundance. When robotic production surges, the world will be filled with massive distributed edge computing devices (each vehicle, each robot is a part), which will represent an unprecedented way to scale intelligence.
Regarding the development of AI chips, Musk predicted a significant leap forward. Currently, mainstream practice is to compress from 16 bits to 4 bits after training, but he believes this year will shift to using 4 bits or lower widths directly for training, combined with small specialized co-processors, which could lead to performance improvements of 10 to 100 times. Afterward, AI will start to design chips on its own, entering an accelerated loop of self-improvement.
Throughout the conversation, Musk repeatedly conveyed a core message: despite short-term growing pains, the tide of technological development is bringing us towards an unprecedented era of material and potential abundance. Energy is nearly limitless, intelligence is ubiquitous, and any individual's grand dreams are achievable. In his words: "This is the most exciting time to be alive ever. The only thing more exciting than today is tomorrow."
