😂 I remember sending the chipmunk to its first class.

😂I remember the first class when sending the chipmunk, all the little friends in the class were sitting on the ground, the teacher was standing at the podium, and I thought this was how the first class would be. Later, the chipmunk told me that in their class, those who wanted to sit on chairs could do so, while those who didn’t want could sit on the ground, and almost all the little friends were sitting on the ground in various positions, of course, this was when he was in elementary school.

Education in Singapore is not just about international schools, even public schools are relatively relaxed. When the chipmunk was studying in Shanghai, there was almost no break; teachers did not leave the classroom after class. Even when not teaching, students couldn't talk loudly in class, and they couldn't leave their seats to play with classmates. Even going to the bathroom required someone to keep track of the count.

I think this is a form of “lazy governance” because of the fear that students might get into trouble at school. Any incident or bump is the school's responsibility, so "tying" students to their seats is considered the safest. I can understand this is the school’s helplessness, but this is what is called not solving the problem, but addressing the people who create the problems.

When the chipmunk was in elementary school, there was no homework at home; all homework was completed at school. In elementary school, they received iPads, and after middle school, they received MacBooks. There was a group project every week that required three to five students to complete together, and at the end of each semester, there would be a "final exam," which was also done in groups, and they had to present to parents.

In middle school, homework began to exist, but it wasn’t difficult. Compared to peers in China, they had a much easier time, mainly because educational resources were relatively abundant. As long as you want to learn, there will always be space to learn. Of course, in any area, top students are very competitive, akin to “other people's children,” but most students studying in Singapore can achieve reasonably good results.

Even those who do poorly in studies can still find some specialized courses and schools. Personally, I feel that the "Western" educational system is more focused on what students are good at rather than what they "need" to know. I vividly remember visiting the chipmunk's school and seeing the music room with over thirty types of instruments. While I was amazed, the teacher explained that if students weren't allowed to explore these instruments, how could they know if they had any talent in that area?

This is the aspect that impressed me the most. In Singapore, there’s no situation where a math teacher takes over PE class or a chemistry teacher conducts music class. Every day, the class is what it is supposed to be, allowing them to play freely when it’s time to play, and letting them encourage each other to study when it’s time to learn.

Perhaps because we aren't particularly outstanding academic talents, I find this relaxed atmosphere quite good. I think about how in the chipmunk's first grade, they'd have to wait until ten o'clock at night to sleep, with endless homework and continual tests, and parents who must avoid play and endless parent-teacher meetings.

Now, this is quite good. At the end of each semester, there’s a parent meeting for the whole school, and each teacher has ten minutes to connect with parents. Students need to sit alongside and reflect on their learning outcomes with the teacher. Additionally, I think the approach to learning here is more about encouragement rather than oppressive education, always highlighting the child’s strengths, stating that the child is smart but just has the wrong way of learning. In some schools, teachers even self-reflect, believing that if a child is not learning well, it’s the fault of their teaching.

These are my most personal feelings. There might be many adjustments to make when coming to Singapore, but bringing the chipmunk here to study should be one of the best decisions I’ve made.
