Greenland is in the middle of a tariff war involving the U.S. and some countries from the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

President Donald Trump threatened Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland with a set of tariffs for having “journeyed to Greenland for purposes unknown,” according to one of his latest posts on Truth Social.

Trump stated:

“Starting on February 1st, 2026, all of the above mentioned Countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland), will be charged a 10% Tariff on any and all goods sent to the United States of America.”

Furthermore, these tariffs would be raised to 25% on June 1st “due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” Trump stressed.

As a justification, Trump explained that these countries, with their actions, “put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable,” and that Greenland was a fundamental piece for national security, given that the so-called “golden dome” can only work at its peak with Greenland’s involvement.

“The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them, including maximum protection, over so many decades,” he concluded.

Trump had repeatedly expressed his interest in annexing Greenland, recently assessing that if the U.S. doesn’t do it, China or Russia will, and that Denmark only had “two dogsleds” to defend its territory.
