El Salvador is taking action to become an artificial intelligence (AI) and tech hub in Latam. According to local media, the nation has started working on its first AI national lab initiative, seeking to develop its own AI, called “sovereign AI.” This initiative would serve several purposes, including its usage to develop other AI systems focused on economic and social uses.
The AI lab will be powered by Nvidia chips that the government has already ordered following President Nayib Bukele’s meeting with Aaron Ginn, CEO of Hydra Host, an infrastructure provider. El Salvador has agreed to purchase B300 chips for this lab, which are among the most advanced chips made by Nvidia, specialized for data center and AI-focused applications. The chips have been ordered and are expected to become available in September due to high demand for this hardware in the current market.
The partnership also includes an educational exchange offered by Hydra Host, which will give master classes to students of the CUBO_ai program, a national AI initiative. This exchange seeks to train Salvadorans in the handling of AI components.
In addition, the country is moving to enact clear regulations regarding the use of AI. In February, the National Assembly passed the Law for the Promotion of Artificial Intelligence and Technology, which promotes the integration of this emergent technology in national services, including electricity, healthcare, security, and transportation.
More recently, the country approved one of the world’s first robotic laws, intended to regulate the development, use, and ethical regulation of physical AI, according to El Salvador’s National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC).
The institution believes that these developments combined will position El Salvador as a regional leader in technological innovation, surpassing larger economies that have not considered these issues.
