"Brotherhood" breaks down, Trump and Musk stage a century-long feud.

As some predicted, the alliance between two narcissists would not last long.

On the morning of June 6, Musk dropped a "nuclear bomb" on Twitter, the social platform he bought for $44 billion, to his 220 million followers: "Trump appears in Epstein's documents, which is the reason these documents have not been made public." This refers to a list of super-rich individuals and politicians involved in the sexual exploitation of underage girls, revealing the darkest corners of American political figures.

Musk stated that Trump appears in Epstein's documents.

This milestone tweet, which garnered over a billion views, witnessed a century-long feud: once political allies who celebrated together at the White House, shook hands, and supported each other, they ultimately turned into enemies, accusing each other and digging up old grievances. Their "honeymoon period" lasted only six months.

A few months ago, Trump appointed Musk as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), marking the tech giant's formal entry into White House policy. However, as Trump aggressively pushed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, their relationship began to deteriorate rapidly.

From "political best friends" to "mutual critics"

The earliest cracks may date back three months. Although their public relationship remained friendly, those around them began to notice their private conflicts gradually surfacing.

In March 2025, reports indicated that Trump refused to show Musk the Pentagon's attack plans for a war with China, which sparked Musk's dissatisfaction. Trump's former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, believed this was the first sign of a rift between the two.

Then in May, Musk pushed the Federal Aviation Administration to adopt his Starlink satellite system for air traffic control, but was rejected due to conflicts of interest and technical issues, further exacerbating Musk's dissatisfaction with the Trump administration. Meanwhile, Musk's large-scale layoffs and institutional shutdown plans at DOGE also triggered strong discontent among cabinet members.

At the end of May, Trump vetoed the nomination of Musk's ally Jared Isaacman to head NASA, which Musk viewed as "the final insult."

Thus, on June 1, Musk publicly expressed his dissatisfaction for the first time in an interview, stating that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had become a scapegoat, with all negative public opinion related to layoffs and budget cuts being directed at him. He expressed frustration with the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, believing it undermined the reform achievements of the DOGE team over the past few months.

Shortly after, on June 3, Musk officially launched an attack on the X platform (formerly Twitter). He referred to the bill as a "huge, absurd, and disgusting monstrosity," which would not only increase the U.S. fiscal deficit by $2.4 trillion but also eliminate tax credits for electric vehicles and clean energy, representing a direct blow to new energy companies like Tesla. He pointed out that while the government was significantly expanding military and infrastructure spending, it sacrificed key policy support for the new energy industry, which was contrary to his understanding of "efficiency reform."

Musk's criticism escalated further. He posted that "excessive spending will make America a debt slave," and bluntly stated, "Congress is bankrupting America." He sarcastically referenced Trump's past criticisms of the debt ceiling, asking, "Is the person who said that back then still around? Has he been replaced by a stand-in?" He even initiated a poll asking whether a new political party should be formed to truly represent the "middle 80% of Americans." This series of actions clearly went beyond policy differences and directly challenged Trump's leadership position in the Republican Party.

Trump's response was equally blunt. On June 5, he posted multiple times, calling Musk "annoying," "crazy," and mocking his criticism of the bill as merely a reaction to the elimination of electric vehicle subsidies. He accused Musk of being "ungrateful," claiming he "knew about this bill months ago" and was now turning against him. Trump further threatened that the simplest way to save the budget would be to terminate all contracts and subsidies between Musk's companies, such as Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink, and the government, which would "save billions" for the treasury.

Musk quickly countered, stating, "Without me, Trump wouldn't win the election." He claimed that his support during the 2024 election helped the Republican Party maintain a majority in the Senate; otherwise, the Democrats would have already taken full control of Congress.

Musk even hinted that if Trump continued to undermine the new energy industry and tech companies, he would not hesitate to push for the establishment of a new political party to compete with him.

On the same day, the U.S. stock market also felt the shockwaves of this conflict. Tesla's stock price plummeted over 14% during trading, evaporating $150 billion in market value, as investors worried that Trump might actually use presidential power to cut off government resources to Musk's business empire, including policy support for Tesla, government contracts, and even SpaceX's space projects.

However, the most impactful explosion occurred on June 6. In the morning, Musk dropped a "nuclear-level" tweet on the X platform, deciding to sever this political relationship in the most intense and extreme way: "Trump appears in Epstein's documents, which is the reason these documents have not been made public."

This was the most lethal blow in the entire dispute. The social platform was flooded overnight with "Trump-Epstein," and Musk's tweet was shared millions of times. Subsequently, Musk retweeted a popular post calling for "Trump's impeachment and JD Vance to take over as president."

Faced with such a fierce attack, Trump chose to return to his strong suit—promoting policy. He reiterated that the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was "the greatest tax cut and spending reduction bill in American history," and if the bill did not pass, "American taxes would increase by 68%." He added, "I don't care if Musk opposes me."

The dispute ignited over the spending bill but ultimately spread to election achievements, business contracts, federal subsidies, and even historical documents involving sexual scandals. Looking at today's "century-long feud," who would have thought that these two political allies were once so close they "tied the same tie"?

Before the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Musk invested $259 million, mobilizing all resources in Silicon Valley, along with his personal influence, to support Trump.

At Trump's third cabinet meeting, Musk wore a red hat that read "Trump is always right," but unfortunately, he probably won't wear it again.

In return, when Musk was under attack, Trump held a 30-minute press conference for him on the White House driveway, test-driving five different types and colors of Tesla cars.

"I like that one," Trump pointed to a bright red Model S priced at about $80,000, claiming he would write an $80,000 check to buy it outright. At that time, Trump also called Musk an absolute "patriot," stating, "He has never asked me for anything."

After Trump secured his victory, the Trump family returned to the White House and took a photo at the entrance, with Trump enthusiastically calling Musk to join for a family portrait, marking a moment of "victor's alliance."

During this period, the two were still close allies committed to advancing reform. Trump needed a "sharp blade" to expand his territory, while Musk needed a platform to realize his political ambitions, and they were highly aligned in their goals and interests.

Until the emergence of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Why does Musk hate the One Big Beautiful Bill Act?

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act is ostensibly a comprehensive budget and policy bill crafted by the Trump administration to "make America great again," but in reality, it is a sweeping fiscal restructuring initiative.

This bill not only aims to continue and expand the tax cuts from Trump's tenure in 2017 but also pushes for a reduction in federal spending, carrying a strong political and ideological color—it cuts all "green" policy resources, completely deviating from the consensus the U.S. has reached in recent years regarding new energy, environmental protection, and technological innovation.

And this is precisely what Musk hates the most.

Musk's initial anger stemmed from the elimination of electric vehicle tax credits. This policy has been a crucial pillar for Tesla to maintain competitiveness in domestic sales. The new bill eliminated the maximum $7,500 tax credit for consumers purchasing electric vehicles, directly weakening Tesla's price appeal.

However, what made Musk furious was another provision in the bill: the elimination of the carbon credits system—this was not just a weakening but a fatal blow to Tesla.

For a long time, Tesla has not only relied on selling cars for profit; its real secret weapon for profitability is carbon credits. Under current U.S. policy, every time Tesla produces and sells a zero-emission electric vehicle, it earns a carbon credit, which traditional automakers (like General Motors, Chrysler, etc.) that produce fuel vehicles and exceed emissions must purchase from Tesla to meet government annual emission compliance requirements. These credits can be seen as a "money printer under policy," continuously supplying cash to Tesla.

In the first quarter of 2025, Tesla generated $595 million in revenue solely from the sale of these carbon credits, while its net profit during the same period was only $409 million. In other words, without these "green credits," Tesla's earnings figures would flip directly, showing a loss.

Moreover, this is not a short-term phenomenon; the entire year of 2024 was similar, with Tesla's core automotive operations operating at a loss, while investors were "comforted" by the overall appearance of profitability, with carbon credits serving as the largest buffer.

Therefore, when the One Big Beautiful Bill Act decided to eliminate this mechanism, Musk was effectively cut off from his lifeline, making it difficult for him to continue "hiding" the losses of his main business in financial reports.

Once this implicit support is lost, Tesla would fall off the list of "the most profitable car companies"—and the vast majority of Musk's wealth is closely tied to the market value of his Tesla shares, which could lead to a collapse in Musk's net worth.

For Trump, Musk has paid $100 billion

For Musk, he has already paid enough.

First, Musk is the largest individual political donor in the 2024 U.S. election, donating approximately $288 million to Trump and Republican candidates he supports.

The larger loss comes from the evaporation of Tesla's market value. The public spat between Musk and Trump on June 6 caused Tesla's stock price to plummet by 14.3%, resulting in a market value loss of about $150 billion.

Reports from June 1 of this year indicated that Musk's net worth was $383.6 billion, with approximately 13% of Tesla shares. Therefore, from the $150 billion market value loss, Musk's direct loss was about $19.5 billion.

Musk's current net worth is estimated at $364.1 billion, down from $486 billion on December 30, 2024, meaning Musk has paid over $100 billion for "the president he helped elevate."

In addition to money, Musk has also paid other costs for Trump, such as the large-scale layoffs of federal employees during his time at DOGE, which offended many.

This led to a nationwide wave of vandalism against Tesla vehicles, intimidation of owners, and protests at dealerships. Tesla factories faced peaceful demonstrations and acts of vandalism, including fires at charging stations. There was also a surge in vandalism against Cybertrucks across the U.S., with some owners even spray-painting their own Tesla vehicles in protest against Musk.

Musk has repeatedly stated that running his business is "very difficult," and Tesla's stock price has experienced the most severe decline in five years.

Outside of Tesla, Musk's other major business empire—SpaceX—has also not been immune. Although this space technology company has indeed secured a large number of NASA contracts in recent years, becoming a new mainstay of the U.S. space program.

However, some hawkish politicians have hinted that if Musk continues to publicly challenge national policies and even incite divisions within the party, the topic of "whether to consider nationalizing SpaceX" will no longer be just a joke.

This is also why Musk has vehemently opposed this bill.

Having paid such a high price, Musk launched a counterattack, not only blasting the bill as "bankrupting America" but also using social media to quote Trump's past statements to mock his contradictions, even supporting "impeaching Trump and replacing him with JD Vance." More shockingly, he publicly threw out the accusation of "Trump's name" from the Epstein documents, officially pulling this confrontation from the fiscal battlefield into the moral and public opinion arena.

This "One Big Beautiful Bill" has now become the "divorce agreement" of their political marriage.
