[Sony and Warner Jointly Sue Anthropic, Accusing It of Using Copyrighted Music to Train AI Models]
According to The Verge, Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, seeking damages for "tens of thousands" of copyrighted works. They accuse Anthropic of large-scale illegal downloading, scraping, and distribution of copyrighted works to develop and train the Claude series AI models. The plaintiffs are seeking up to $150,000 in damages for each work and an additional $25,000 for each instance of removing identifiable copyright data. If the court rules in favor of Sony and Warner and awards the maximum compensation, the total damages could reach billions of dollars.
