It sits in a narrow stretch of French territory surrounded by Belgium on three sides, just a few kilometers from the Belgian border. The location looks almost deliberately provocative on a map, but there is a practical reason for it: the plant was built along the Meuse River, which provides the enormous amount of cooling water required by a nuclear power station. Chooz A began operating in the 1960s, while the two much larger Chooz B reactors entered commercial operation in 2000 and 2002. Because the Belgian border is so close, nuclear safety at Chooz has long been a cross-border concern. France and Belgium cooperate on radiation monitoring, emergency planning, and nuclear safety, with Belgian authorities maintaining monitoring systems near the border. So, don’t worry.
