[Brave Launches Brave Accounts, Utilizing OPAQUE Protocol to Ensure Passwords Never Leave Devices]
Privacy-focused browser Brave has announced the launch of Brave Accounts, allowing users to access the newly introduced Email Aliases feature and future Brave services through this account. Brave Accounts utilize the OPAQUE encrypted authentication protocol, enabling users to prove to the server that they know their password, while the server can also prove its legitimacy to the user. Throughout the process, passwords are never transmitted and always remain on the user's device. Brave stated that even in the event of a database breach, attackers would still need to obtain the server's key and would be unable to crack passwords in bulk. However, OPAQUE cannot prevent phishing attacks, so users are still advised to use strong passwords.
