Brave Accounts utilize the OPAQUE encrypted authentication protocol, enabling users to prove to the server that they know their password, while the server can also prove its legitimacy to the user. Throughout the process, passwords are never transmitted and always remain on the user's device. Brave stated that even in the event of a database breach, attackers would still need to obtain the server's key and would be unable to crack passwords in bulk. However, OPAQUE cannot prevent phishing attacks, so users are still advised to use strong passwords.
