[AI Becomes the Focus of Massachusetts Senate Primary, Anthropic Donates $500,000 to Support Candidate Markey] Deep Tide TechFlow reports that on August 28, according to CNBC, the Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary will take place next Tuesday, with artificial intelligence emerging as a central issue. The competition between incumbent Senator Ed Markey (80 years old) and Representative Seth Moulton (47 years old) has been heating up. Moulton capitalized on Markey's misstep during a debate, where Markey admitted he was unsure whether he used AI, turning it into a campaign ad and stating that this incident exemplifies "why we need a new generation of leadership." Anthropic-backed nonprofit Public First Action donated $500,000 to the pro-Markey PAC "Commonwealth Together," citing Markey's "clear support for AI regulation." Markey had previously led efforts to remove a state-level AI regulation ban provision from the budget reconciliation bill with a 99-to-1 vote. Anthropic had previously donated $20 million to this organization. Both candidates advocate for stronger AI regulation: Moulton has called for federal AI legislation, while Markey has introduced an "AI Accountability Agenda." Markey has also received endorsements from progressive heavyweights such as Sanders, Warren, and Ocasio-Cortez. The latest poll shows Markey leading Moulton by 35 percentage points, with 63% to Moulton's 28%.
