Bitcoin's mainnet just mined its first quantum-resistant transaction.
On August 26, the StarkWare team successfully pushed a quantum-secure Bitcoin transaction worth 10,000 satoshis into block #964199 on the Bitcoin mainnet—no soft fork, no hard fork, and no changes to Bitcoin's existing consensus rules.
Bitcoin has always faced an inevitable issue: its current signatures rely on elliptic curve cryptography. If sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge in the future, exposed public keys could theoretically be reverse-engineered to derive private keys.
What QSB does is pretty straightforward and bold: it adds an extra layer of protection to specific Bitcoin transactions using hash-based locks. Then, off-chain, it performs heavy computations to bind this lock to a specific transaction. This way, even if an attacker cracks the original elliptic curve signature, they still can't just transfer the coins at will.
Right now, a single QSB transaction requires hundreds of dollars in off-chain computation and takes several hours to process. Plus, since it's a non-standard transaction, regular nodes won't propagate it by default. This time, the transaction was packaged by miners via MARA's private channel to get it through.
