[Google Restructures DeepMind, Moves 90-Person AI Responsibility Team Out]
According to a report by Jinse Finance on August 27, citing the Wall Street Journal, Google plans to move approximately 90 members of its AI responsibility team out of DeepMind in early September, integrating them into the global affairs division responsible for lobbying and public policy. This move is part of DeepMind's further integration into Google's system, with human resources and policy teams also being relocated out of DeepMind.
The AI responsibility team primarily focuses on researching cutting-edge AI risks, including testing models for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear risks, as well as studying the psychological impacts of user interactions with AI and chatbot systems. Some employees are concerned that after being moved out of DeepMind, the distance from the Gemini model development team will increase, potentially weakening their ability to conduct independent research and identify risks in advanced models.
Google stated that the team will still retain access to DeepMind's resources, including computing power and personnel, and other teams responsible for model behavior, privacy, and security will remain within DeepMind. This adjustment comes amid ongoing changes in DeepMind's management and talent structure.
