[X Issues Cease-and-Desist Letter to Open-Source Project Nitter, Demands Permanent Shutdown of Related Services and Code Repositories] BlockBeats News, August 26: According to a report by TechCrunch, the community platform X has sent cease-and-desist letters to the open-source project Nitter and several related instances, demanding the permanent shutdown of their services and project code repositories. Nitter allows users to browse public posts without logging into X or using the official app and has been adopted by third-party sites like XCancel. According to Nitter's official website, X sent the legal notice on August 24, and as of now, nitter.net has been taken offline, with project development temporarily halted. The project's creator, Zedeus, stated that they are seeking legal advice, and other Nitter instances have also received similar letters. X accuses Nitter of illegally using and bypassing its API to scrape X data and access X accounts and session tokens, violating platform rules and relevant state and federal laws. X has demanded that Nitter cease operations by 5 PM Eastern Time on August 25. This is not the first time X has restricted Nitter. In 2024, after X tightened its API policies, Nitter.net was temporarily taken offline. The project later resumed development, but hosted instances required connection to real X accounts.
