The government stated that it plans to draft the new regulations by the end of this year and legislate them by early 2027. Albanese said, "We have reached a consensus on a national-level artificial intelligence law for Australia. We want to ensure that while attracting investment, we avoid having eight different systems operating simultaneously across the country." Queensland and the Northern Territory initially opposed Albanese's proposal, which included requiring high-energy-consuming data centers to use renewable energy. Queensland officials previously argued that this would grant greater control to Canberra and could potentially hinder investment.
