[X Issues Cease-and-Desist Letter to Open-Source Project Nitter, Demanding Permanent Shutdown]
According to TechCrunch, X Corporation has issued a cease-and-desist letter to the open-source third-party frontend project Nitter and multiple instance operators, demanding the permanent closure of related instances and the removal of the project's code repository. Nitter allows users to browse public posts on X without logging in, while removing ads, tracking cookies, and JavaScript. X accuses Nitter of illegally circumventing its API restrictions, scraping platform data, and unlawfully accessing X accounts and session tokens. Nitter.net has currently ceased operations, and project development has been temporarily suspended as its creator seeks legal advice. X had previously tightened its API policies in 2024 to restrict Nitter's operations.
