OpenAI revealed that its self-developed chip, Jalapeño, outperforms NVIDIA's GB300 in two key metrics: AI workload processing per unit of power and response speed. Richard Ho, OpenAI's chip lead, stated that Jalapeño delivers strong performance at a low power consumption of 700 watts, which helps significantly reduce data center electricity costs.
Then SemiAnalysis shared that their researchers visited OpenAI's lab and conducted real-world tests on Jalapeño using their proprietary benchmarking suite, InferenceX. The conclusion was straightforward: this chip beats all NVIDIA, AMD, and Google chips they’ve tested before in terms of performance per watt (perf/W).
Although it’s still not on par with the Rubin series, surpassing Blackwell in such a short time is seriously impressive.
