Claude Code team member Thariq responded, saying they’re working to make Claude Code more customizable and will support AGENTS.md in the future, reasoning that "different model families aren’t interchangeable, and system prompts greatly impact model performance." But not everyone was convinced by this explanation. One developer questioned: if every model needs its own optimized prompt file, then why is there only one CLAUDE.md instead of splitting it into multiple files for different model versions? A more reasonable approach would be to default to the industry’s open standard AGENTS.md and treat CLAUDE.md as a supplementary option for special cases, not the other way around.
