According to informed sources, the current policy of the Trump administration is to "temporarily avoid military action against Iran," instead increasing economic pressure through a naval blockade and a new round of sanctions by the U.S. Treasury Department, while pushing as much oil as possible through the Strait of Hormuz into the global energy market. U.S. officials stated that clearing most of the mines in the Strait of Hormuz and the recent increase in oil tankers passing through the southern channel have "significantly weakened Iran's influence on the global energy market." One U.S. official remarked, "Iran has lost control of the strait, and now the U.S. controls it." The U.S. believes that the maritime blockade is cutting off Iran's critical revenue streams, with almost no oil tankers appearing near Iran's main oil export port, Kharg Island, over the past two weeks.
