The Hawaiian island of Lānaʻi, about 98% of which is owned by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. Lānaʻi’s unusual ownership history stretches back long before Larry Ellison. In 1922, James Dole’s Hawaiian Pineapple Company acquired most of the island and transformed roughly 18,000 acres into what became the world’s largest pineapple plantation. The industry shaped Lānaʻi for the next 70 years, attracting workers from Japan, the Philippines, China, Korea, Portugal and elsewhere. Castle & Cooke took control of Dole’s interests in 1961. In 1985, billionaire David Murdock acquired Castle & Cooke, along with its roughly 98% ownership of Lānaʻi. As pineapple production became less profitable, the island gradually shifted toward tourism and resorts. The final commercial pineapple harvest took place in 1992. Then, in 2012, Murdock sold his Lānaʻi holdings to Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, giving Ellison control of roughly 98% of the island.(Historic Vids)
