[The U.S. Treasury May Utilize Nearly $1 Trillion in TGA to Fund Long-Term Treasury Buybacks] According to CNBC, citing two senior U.S. Treasury officials, the Treasury may use funds from its General Account (TGA) to support the recently announced expansion of the U.S. Treasury buyback program. Treasury Secretary Besant has currently increased the TGA balance to approximately $950 billion, up from the Biden administration's target level of about $550 billion to $600 billion. The U.S. Treasury previously announced that, starting September 9, the single buyback size for long-term off-the-run Treasuries would be raised from $2 billion to at least $4 billion, with Besant stating that the actual size could be even larger. Officials did not disclose how much TGA funds would be used or when related arrangements would be announced, and they noted that issuing short-term Treasury bills could still be one potential funding source.
