[Besant Eyes Trillion-Dollar 'Emergency Fund Pool' to Support Expansion of Government Bond Purchase Program] Odaily Planet Daily reports, according to CNBC, two senior U.S. Treasury officials have revealed that the U.S. Treasury may utilize the Treasury General Account (TGA), which is close to $1 trillion in size, to provide funding for its recently announced expansion of the government bond purchase program. Using the TGA account would grant the Treasury greater capacity to influence long-term bond yields. Last week, the U.S. Treasury unexpectedly announced that it would increase the repurchase scale of long-term 'off-the-run securities' from $2 billion to at least $4 billion. U.S. Treasury Secretary Besant stated that the scale of such operations could even exceed this new minimum level. However, the Treasury did not specify how it would fund these purchase actions at the time. Most market participants previously believed that the Treasury would raise funds by increasing the issuance of short-term government bonds (Treasury bills). If the TGA account is utilized, market perceptions of this plan may shift. The TGA is essentially the U.S. government's 'checking account' at the Federal Reserve, akin to an emergency fund pool for the government. The funds in this account already come from existing tax revenues. (Jin10)
