[South Korean Won Rises to Nearly One-Year High Amid Weaker Dollar and Strong Chip Exports]
Odaily Planet Daily News – On Monday, the South Korean won rose to its highest level in nearly a year. The U.S. dollar remained near multi-month lows, with U.S. Treasury buybacks and uncertainties stemming from sanctions on Iran putting pressure on the market. The weaker dollar provided some breathing room for Asian currencies, with the South Korean won leading gains on Monday. The won briefly strengthened to 1,376.5 against the dollar, marking its strongest level since mid-September 2025.
In addition to external factors, a surge in South Korea's semiconductor exports also bolstered the won's strength, helping it withstand pressures from rising oil prices. "Dollar selling by exporters and corporates, combined with the overall weakness of the dollar, appears to be providing more sustained support for the won," said Christopher Wong, FX strategist at OCBC Bank.
