5 Signals to Determine a Bull Market
A crypto bull market usually requires simultaneous improvements in price, capital inflow, on-chain data, and broader market participation. A short-term Bitcoin pump alone isn’t enough to confirm a trend.
To determine whether the crypto market has entered a bull market, you can’t just look at Bitcoin’s strong performance over a few days. More reliable signals include prices holding above key long-term levels, accompanied by new capital inflows, improved on-chain profitability, and Ethereum and other tokens starting to rally as well.
Bitcoin remains the core asset for gauging market phases. Compared to short-term spikes, sustained movement above key resistance levels and investor cost zones is a better indicator of whether buying momentum can continue. More importantly, there needs to be consistent net capital inflow, as price increases alone may not be enough to support a new expansion phase.
Institutional demand is now another critical signal. For example, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs can absorb large amounts of BTC during periods of sustained net inflows, amplifying upward trends. Back in May 2026, these funds recorded six consecutive weeks of net inflows, totaling approximately $3.4 billion. This was seen as an example of institutional demand rapidly strengthening the market.
A decline in Bitcoin dominance might indicate that funds are shifting to altcoins, but this alone doesn’t confirm a bull market. A true altcoin rally usually requires a broader range of tokens outperforming, not just a few projects experiencing short-term pumps.
Reliable bull market signals typically require multiple indicators to align:
- Bitcoin forming higher highs and higher lows over a longer period
- Sustained net inflows into ETFs and spot markets, rather than just leverage-driven moves
- Price increases accompanied by higher trading volumes
- On-chain profitability improving, with long-term holders not engaging in large-scale sell-offs
- Altcoins broadly participating in the rally, with Bitcoin dominance declining
No single indicator can confirm a bull market. Stronger signals come from price increases backed by real capital inflows, improved on-chain data, and broader market participation. If only prices are moving, the trend reversal is usually quicker.
