ChatGPT has launched an Apple Messages plugin, designed to help you organize iMessages, find unanswered messages, coordinate replies with your calendar, and even handle spam texts. But the community's first reaction was concern over privacy and security, with the main controversy revolving around permissions. This plugin requires Full Disk Access, contacts, and automation permissions. In theory, for an AI assistant to help you reply to messages, it needs access to your private communications, chat history, and might even link to other system data. This directly clashes with the trust model Apple has built over the past decade: private information should stay on the device as much as possible. The most interesting part is that this debate isn’t really about whether OpenAI or Apple is right or wrong, but rather about the biggest contradiction of the AI era that’s starting to emerge: The stronger the AI, the more context it needs. But the more context it has, the closer it gets to your private life. All future AI assistants will face the same question: Are you willing to let it see your entire life in exchange for an AI that understands you better?
