**[Involving Children's Online Privacy Protection, TikTok Settles for $400 Million]** Golden Finance reported that on August 21 local time, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a $400 million settlement agreement with TikTok, ByteDance, and its affiliated entities (collectively referred to as "TikTok") to resolve lawsuits related to its compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and its implementing regulations. Under the settlement agreement, TikTok will immediately pay $300 million, and after the court revokes the previous consent decree against TikTok's predecessor Musical.ly, it will pay an additional $100 million. This settlement represents one of the largest compensation amounts in COPPA cases to date. The lawsuit began in August 2024, when the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission jointly sued TikTok Inc., ByteDance Ltd., and its affiliated entities, accusing them of knowingly allowing children under the age of 13 to create regular TikTok accounts and collecting and retaining personal information without notifying or obtaining parental consent.
