[U.S. Supreme Court Temporarily Halts Work Suspension Order, Trump Allowed to Continue Building Banquet Hall]
Reported by Golden Finance, on August 22, the U.S. Supreme Court announced on Friday that President Trump may continue advancing the construction of the White House banquet hall while the justices review the emergency appeal filed by the Trump administration, which seeks permission to proceed with the project. This temporary measure, known as an 'administrative stay,' provides the justices with additional time to consider whether the lower court's work suspension order for the project should take effect. Without action from the Supreme Court, the lower court's injunction would have taken effect on Saturday, immediately halting the 90,000-square-foot project. Trump has stated that the project is necessary for national security.
Two lower courts had previously ruled that Trump's actions to demolish the East Wing of the White House and initiate the banquet hall construction exceeded presidential authority. Last fall, Trump demolished the East Wing within just a few days and immediately began construction on the banquet hall, despite the project not receiving congressional approval. However, during the Trump administration's appeal process, he has been allowed to continue construction.
