[FASB Seeks Public Comment on Recognition of Stablecoins and Other Digital Assets as Cash Equivalents]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued a proposed Accounting Standards Update (ASU) on August 18, 2026, aimed at clarifying how the current definition of 'cash equivalents' applies to certain digital assets, such as stablecoins, and enhancing the transparency of disclosures regarding key components of cash equivalents. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their comments by November 19, 2026.
In the 2025 FASB agenda consultation project and other feedback, stakeholders highlighted uncertainties regarding whether certain digital assets, including stablecoins, meet the definition of cash equivalents under current Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), leading to inconsistencies in practical application. The proposed ASU will provide illustrative examples to promote more consistent application of this definition and improve comparability among entities electing to report eligible digital assets as cash equivalents, without altering the current definition of 'cash equivalents.'
Additionally, the proposed rules require all entities reporting assets as cash equivalents, whether or not they include digital assets, to enhance disclosures about the key components and related amounts of cash equivalents. This is intended to provide investors and other users of financial statements with more transparent information. The proposed ASU and instructions for submitting comments can be found on the FASB website.
