[South Korean Finance Minister: Will Closely Monitor the Impact of Rising Global Bond Yields] Odaily Planet Daily News – South Korea's Finance Minister stated on Friday that the country will closely monitor its government bond market as long-term yields in major economies rise and economic uncertainties intensify. During a meeting with financial officials, the Finance Minister noted: 'Due to increased fiscal spending and uncertainties stemming from the Middle East situation, long-term government bond yields in major economies, including the United States, Japan, and Europe, have reached their highest levels in decades.' He added: 'The government will closely monitor the issuance and trading conditions of government bonds and strive to reduce financing costs for businesses and households.' Additionally, he mentioned that the South Korean won-to-dollar exchange rate fell to 1,300 for the first time this week, after previously dropping to around 1,550 in early July. This trend was attributed to South Korea's record-breaking current account surplus. However, he cautioned that considering geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and monetary policies of major economies, the exchange rate faces both positive and negative risks. 'The government will remain vigilant and respond to market fluctuations accordingly,' he said. (Yonhap News Agency)
