It's not QE, but what significant is the signal
The U.S. government issues bonds to borrow money. Over time, some of those older bonds become less actively traded.
The Treasury regularly runs buyback operations where it offers to repurchase some of those older bonds from investors. This removes them from the market and can make trading smoother.
On August 19, 2026, the Treasury announced it will at least double the maximum size of these buybacks for longer-term bonds:
- From a previous maximum of $2 billion per operation
- To at least $4 billion per operation
Where does money come from?
That cash doesn’t magically appear. It comes from the two places the government always gets money:
- Tax revenue (and other income the government collects)
- Borrowing: selling new Treasury bills, notes, or bonds to investors(BloFin Research)
