According to WuTalk, cybersecurity company Rapid7 has disclosed a crypto scam operation called Operation ASTERIX. Researchers discovered a misconfigured server that exposed approximately 885,000 phone numbers, exchange account verification tools, phishing panels, auto-dialer scripts, and fake Trezor, Ledger, and Exodus wallet apps.
The attackers first batch-verify whether phone numbers are linked to platforms like CryptoCom and Kraken. For example, out of 316,000 German phone numbers, 43,066 were confirmed to be associated with CryptoCom accounts, with a hit rate of about 13.6%. They then filter targets using names, emails, regions, and other information. Through phishing emails and phone calls impersonating customer service, users are tricked into installing fake wallets and entering their seed phrases. The stolen data is then exfiltrated via Telegram.
