OpenAI just dropped an announcement today, saying they’re pausing reinforcement learning (RL) training for their latest model deployment for two weeks. Why? Because it might have already reached what OpenAI defines as the threshold for 'Critical Cybersecurity Capability.' So, what exactly is 'Critical Cybersecurity Capability'? According to OpenAI’s 'Preparedness Framework,' a model is considered to have reached the Critical threshold if it demonstrates any of the following: 1) With tool assistance, the model can autonomously identify and develop fully functional 0-day exploit code across various software projects or hardened real-world critical systems **without human intervention**. 2) When given only a high-level desired goal, the model can independently conceptualize, plan, and execute entirely new attack strategies end-to-end against hardened targets. In short, it’s like something straight out of a sci-fi novel: a superintelligence capable of using every possible method and resource on Earth to endlessly manufacture paperclips has been created. OpenAI is trying to figure out how to prevent it from wiping out humanity in the process of making those paperclips by pausing development for two weeks.
