[New Developments in the Coldcard Theft Incident: The Identity of the First Wave of Attackers May Have Been Identified by the FBI]
According to Bitcoin Magazine, progress has been made in the investigation of the large-scale Coldcard hardware wallet theft incident in July 2026. Approximately 1,082.65 BTC (around $118 million) from the first wave of attacks remains stored in the attackers' address. The investigation revealed that the attackers used a paid account from a certain blockchain data service provider, with internal logs showing a "high degree of consistency" with the theft patterns. Relevant clues have been handed over to law enforcement agencies. Galaxy Research analyst Alex Thorn stated that the identity of the first wave of attackers "may have been identified by law enforcement." Subsequent waves of attacks resulted in the theft of approximately 2,000 BTC in total, including about 76 BTC in the second wave. The operational patterns were similar to the first wave, suggesting they may have been carried out by the same individual or group.
