[An Elderly Hong Kong Man in His 80s Falls Victim to Fake Cryptocurrency App Scam: Over HK$5 Million Lost in 1.5 Months] BlockBeats News, August 19: Hong Kong police recently disclosed a cryptocurrency investment scam targeting the elderly. An 80-something retired man clicked on a fake link in an online pop-up ad this June and downloaded a counterfeit app impersonating the cryptocurrency platform 'Trust Wallet.' The scammers, posing as platform customer service representatives, lured him into investing with promises of 'high returns and big profits.' Following their instructions, the victim withdrew money from his bank and exchanged the cash for cryptocurrency at a crypto exchange shop. Over the next one and a half months, he transferred a total of over HK$5 million worth of ETH in multiple transactions to a wallet designated by the scammers. It was only after he was unable to withdraw funds from the fake app and lost contact with the customer service that he realized he had been scammed. Hong Kong police have reminded families to pay attention to the online habits and financial situations of elderly relatives and to proactively share anti-fraud information. They also warned against investment scams involving fake apps and promises of high returns. [Original Article Link]
