[U.S. Debt May Surpass $40 Trillion Months Ahead of Schedule]
According to The Washington Post, U.S. debt could surpass the $40 trillion mark this week, months earlier than previously predicted. This is partly due to the reversal of Trump-era tariff policies, which has resulted in the loss of billions of dollars in fiscal revenue. The revenue shortfall has forced the U.S. Treasury to accelerate borrowing to cover national expenditures.
Six months ago, the Congressional Budget Office projected that the total U.S. national debt for this fiscal year would reach $39.4 trillion. However, data released by the Treasury on Monday showed that the national debt has already reached $39.9 trillion and continues to grow.
The accelerated accumulation of debt suggests that the next deadline to raise the statutory borrowing limit may also arrive sooner than expected. Just last year, Congress set the debt ceiling at $41.1 trillion.
