"Google buys Spirit Airlines' entire data for $10M to train Gemini Google outbid AI data company Mercor (which offered $7.5M) in a bankruptcy auction, securing the complete internal data of the now-defunct U.S. budget airline Spirit Airlines for $10M. The deal is pending approval at a court hearing on August 19. Massive data scale: 100 million emails, 500 million Teams records, 516 code repositories with approximately 30 million lines of code, 763,000 flight records, 190 million booking records, 7.5 billion transaction records, as well as financial, HR, and legal contract system data. Google clarified that they’re not buying Spirit’s business model but rather a comprehensive record of how a company communicates, prices, operates, and ultimately fails—valuable for training AI agents capable of completing multi-step tasks. Personal data will be anonymized by a third party, and Google is prohibited from attempting to re-identify individuals. Spirit ceased operations entirely this May after failing its bankruptcy restructuring. Passenger data is not included in this transaction and is being sold separately to buyers in the travel and hospitality industry. Google Cloud recently signed a 5-year AI partnership with Ryanair, hinting at a specific interest in aviation industry operations knowledge. #AI #Google #Gemini #SpiritAirlines #TechNews #Aviation #DataScience
