[South Korea Plans Underwater Data Center, Ulsan Pilot Project to Accommodate 100,000 Servers]
According to Deep Tide TechFlow, on August 17, South Korea is planning to build an underwater data center to address the conflict between the expansion of AI infrastructure and limited land resources. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of South Korea has selected Ulsan to carry out a pilot project, which involves placing servers into large capsules submerged 20 meters underwater, with a maximum capacity of 100,000 servers. The pilot project will cost 51.1 billion Korean won (approximately 243 million RMB), and testing could begin as early as this year. The capsules must withstand pressure three times the standard atmospheric pressure, with the goal of enabling the equipment to operate underwater continuously for 5 to 7 years. The project is led by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, with participation from SK Telecom, Lotte Engineering & Construction, and POSCO.
