[South Korean Retail Investors Flock to Leveraged Single-Stock ETFs, Brokers and Exchanges Earn Over 100 Billion KRW in Fees in Two Months]
According to a report by Caixin, since the launch of leveraged and inverse ETFs tracking Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, South Korean exchanges and brokers have collectively earned over 117 billion KRW in fee revenue in just over two months. Some opinions suggest that individual investors are rushing into these high-risk products, allowing exchanges responsible for market operations and brokers providing intermediary services to rake in massive fees.
Data obtained and submitted on the 17th from the Financial Supervisory Service and the Korea Exchange shows that from the listing of leveraged and inverse single-stock ETFs related to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix on May 27 to the end of last month, exchanges and brokers collected a total of 117.26 billion KRW in related fees across 16 products. On active trading days, the daily fee revenue for exchanges alone can exceed 1 billion KRW.
