OpenSea founder sold another platform: This time it’s not NFTs, it’s AI
Stripe acquired OpenRouter for $7 billion+. Many people don’t know that OpenRouter’s CEO, Alex Atallah, was one of the co-founders of OpenSea back in the day.
This guy has started two companies, and both were super successful. First time, no token launch. This time, he got smart—sell when it’s time to sell.
OpenRouter doesn’t train GPT, Claude, or Gemini itself. Instead, it connects hundreds of AI models behind a single API, letting developers compare prices, speeds, and switch models anytime, while taking a cut in the process.
OpenRouter was founded in 2023. Just a few months ago, its valuation during fundraising was only $1.3 billion. Now Stripe swooped in and bought it for $7 billion+, multiplying its valuation by over 5 times in a short period.
Alex Atallah once described OpenRouter as the AI version of Stripe.
