Spotted @0xMilkRabbit hyping up HSBC Hong Kong's Pulse credit card multiple times in the group, so I decided to get one myself and see what this so-called 'holy grail card' among cashback enthusiasts is all about.
Got the physical card yesterday, so here’s the full timeline of the application process for reference:
7/13: Scheduled a meeting with an HSBC client manager and opened an HSBC China Premier account in person. Transferred the required amount into the account via the app on the same day.
7/18: Completed account opening for an HSBC Hong Kong Premier account (savings account) through a lawyer's witness.
7/24: Received the first package via DHL, which contained the PIN for the HSBC Hong Kong Premier card.
7/28: Received the second package via EMS, which contained the physical HSBC Hong Kong Premier ATM card. For security reasons, they send these separately.
7/30: Called 4009200828 to activate the Hong Kong Premier account.
8/1: Called again to set up the "phone banking password," which is required to unlock the full functionality of the HSBC HK app. Super annoying—had to make multiple calls, and the experience was terrible.
8/1: Used the "Cross-Border Payment" feature in the CMB app (daily limit of 10k RMB) and ICBC app (daily limit of 30k RMB) to transfer RMB to the Hong Kong Premier account. This process is commonly referred to as "brick-moving."
8/3: Finished moving the funds and submitted the Pulse credit card application via the HSBC HK app.
8/11: Received a text message confirming the Pulse application was approved. Took 8 days, including a weekend.
8/16: Received the physical Pulse card in the mail and activated it directly in the HSBC HK app. However, there was no "Add to Apple Pay" button in the app. To bind the card to Apple Pay, I had to call customer service for activation. I really hate calling banks/insurance companies to verify my identity—it’s such a hassle, but I had no choice.
After binding it to Apple Pay, I started using this card for most of my online purchases. I’m curious to see how much I can 'save' in a year with Pulse’s cashback policy
