The first decentralized on-chain CPU in human history has been born. So interesting!
Someone built a 2.22Hz CPU on the BNB Chain. It’s ridiculously slow, but this experiment is way more fascinating than I expected. So, I quickly teamed up with AI to dive deeper into it, and the more I researched, the more hooked I got. What should I do?
@Blonskr actually managed to create a 4-bit processor on-chain.
Each token corresponds to a “transistor,” and then logic gates and flip-flops are used to piece together the circuits. The entire processor is made up of 2,251 logic units, comparable to the 1971 Intel 4004, and it successfully ran the Fibonacci sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13.
The most mind-blowing part is its clock. Regular CPUs rely on hardware clocks ticking like crazy, but this CPU uses the BNB Chain’s block production:
One block is produced every 0.45 seconds, and it advances one cycle per block, so its clock speed is only 2.22Hz.
If you compare it to a modern 5GHz CPU, the difference is about 2.25 billion times.
To match that speed by shortening block production time, you’d need to produce a block every 0.2 nanoseconds. In that time, light can only travel about 6 centimeters.
So, it’s basically impossible to replace the CPU in your computer with this. But I think the coolest part of this thing isn’t its performance—it’s that the CPU’s “clock” has been shifted from a physical crystal oscillator to the consensus of an entire blockchain.
A CPU is essentially a state machine, and a blockchain is fundamentally a state machine maintained by the entire network. Now, someone has actually managed to embed one processor into another giant state machine.
This has created a very peculiar kind of computer:
It might be the slowest in the world, but no one owns its power button, and the entire network can verify every single step of its calculations.
Next week, the creator plans to fully open-source the protocol, allowing people to assemble even more complex on-chain processors like building with LEGO.
In the short term, this thing has no practical use—it’s almost like performance art.
But the most interesting experiments in Crypto often start by creating something that wasn’t supposed to exist, and then slowly figuring out what it’s actually good for.
